Faulkes Telescope Images

Deep Sky Objects - M 95

Here are some images which were captured using the Faulkes Telescope North at the Going Nova Science Festival
which was held at Horizon Scotland at the Business Park in Forres in the north of Scotland.

The event ran from Thursday 10th November 2005 until Saturday 12th November.
During the Festival, the telescope was under the control of members of  the north of Scotland's two mainland astronomy clubs.

This is eric's first attempt at M95.
The bar is really obvious but note particularly, the dark, semi-circular dust lane at 7 o'clock from the bright core of the galaxy and the extension of this dust lane heading out towards the spiral arms.

A Luminance Layer was created from a grey-scale version of the above image and added to the colour version. This reduced the noise in the image and increased the contrast in the spiral arms.

Eric reprocessed his original image by adding a Luminance Layer . The spiral arms and dust lanes now stand out even more, especially the dust lane at 2 o'clock from the core.
